Rose of the Month

By Mandi Borland

My Mom likes roses. I think roses are pretty cool, but my Mom really likes roses

I especially like the neat stuff roses can do. I found out in Middle School if you take a rose to a teacher a couple of times, she's your friend for the entire year, and she'll let you sit anywhere in the classroom you want.

Then a few years later, I really wanted my boyfriend’s Mom to like me, so one afternoon I cut a bunch of my Mom's roses and took them to her. She was so surprised !! And was really nice to me after that.

I think it's neat too some of the cute names people give roses, like ‘Neon Cowboy’.

So when planting new roses last spring I saw one named ‘Uncle Joe’ in the Weeks catalogue. It was described as "Trophy hunters (that would be Mom) just love this ruby red ribbon grabber. Big opulent buds open very slowly to high-centered gigantic blossoms."

And since my name is Amanda Jo, I thought great, here is a rose almost named for me!

Picture not available. It's classified as a Hybrid Tea, with a Roses in Review rating of 7.9 introduced in 1972 by Kern Rose Nursery. All this rose lingo I'm not sure I understand.

I just know it's beautiful, the blooms are awesome big, and a really classic red. They remind me of the roses in the movie Scarface, and other classic early Technicolor movies where all the color on the screen is dull, then just one single red rose comes on with it's rich red standing out above the rest.

I don't know much about how to take care of roses, pruning, cutting and spraying and stuff, but I do know ‘Uncle Joe’ is my favorite rose, and he is my personal gift for Mom.
